Cheaper Teen Auto Insurance -- How Your Teen Driver Can Help
The time comes when your little kid becomes a teen and wants to drive like others. While this should be a joyful moment, many parents remember it with some mixed feelings. While you pray that your teen stays safe behind wheels, you're also concerned that it would raise your costs. Could you imagine the additional cost of gas? As if that wasn't tough enough, this teen driver could drive up your rate by as much as 200%. Thankfully, it's NOT like the weather. You can do more than complain. You can take sure steps to pay less. Here are those steps...
I will list several things and then dwell more on just one (the last point)...
1. Let your kid pay at least part of the bill if they must drive. Teens you pay their own bills tend to be more responsible behind wheels. They are also more open to any ideas that will help them cut down costs.
2. Make him/her a secondary driver on your oldest car (Such a car should be ok without comprehensive and collision coverage).
3. Don't allow your teen to learn driving from fellow teens. If they've done that, let them upgrade their driving skills at a certified defensive driving center. Apart from the fact that this will save you on premium, it will help keep your teen and our roads safer.
4. Encourage your teen to maintain straight A's or a minimum of B's. Insurance companies have the belief that kids who maintain good grades are far less prone to recklessness behind wheels.
5. Make sure your teen drives a car that has all the recommended safety gadgets/features.
6. Let them use the public mass transit whenever they can. It will cut down mileage and reduce your rates. This is without counting the precious dollars you'd save on gas.
7. Teens are very comfortable with the internet (We all know how hard it is to get them off those computers). Let this work to your mutual benefit...
If you want to do extensive comparison shopping, then your teen can help you out. They have the time and skill to do this.
Just tell them that you want the best price to value ratio. They should be encouraged to get quotes from NOT less than five sites.
Let them shortlist the most affordable quotes. You can go through those short listed and make the final decision. If done right, you could save over a thousand in premium dollars by doing this alone.
